BUDDHA'S BIRTHDAY!!
May 10, 2009 Posted By: Administrator |
Today, May 9, 2009, will mark the birth of Buddha’s. There are a few discrepancies concerning Buddha’s actual age, but all agree he is over 2,500 years old. With some of the holiest places in the world for Buddhist’s in Nepal, I was excited to witness the celebration of Lord Buddha’s birthday, or Buddha Jayanti. My boyfriend, being Buddhist, set off to show me the way they celebrate. First stop would be a morning ride over to Swayambhunath, or as it commonly known to tourists the monkey temple, for a view of the celebration. Swayambhunath is the single most profound expression of Buddhist symbolism in Nepal. Typically we ride the motorcycle to the very top of the temple, from the back road, but seeing as they had blocked it off to all motor vehicles we walked to 365 steps to the top. The stair case was loaded with jewelry venders, small children, peop + Read More

Ever thought about going Canyoning??

When you hear the word canyoning, what is the first thing that comes into your mind? Is it repelling down cascading waterfalls? Or is it hiking in the dense forests of national parks? When I was packing up in the early morning hours to embark on my first canyoning experience, I had no idea what to expect. I met the van around eight o’clock. It was already carrying three other people who also were about to experience their first day canyoning. I knew nothing about this sport or what to expect, not even the direction of where the car was going to go. We ended up heading towards Bouhda, toward the entrance of the Shivapuri national park . Making a small journey up the hill, the lack of water was extremely evident. The granite rocks were exposed and the once seemingly roaring river was now a mere trickle. I was wondering how intense today was going to be as there had been little to no rain for the past six + Read More

Borderlands!!!!!!

Borderlands is a spacious, beautiful resort located on the banks of the Bhote Kosi River just 16ks from the Tibetan/Nepali border. Making your way out of Kathmandu valley can be difficult, but the preferred choice is by motorcycle. Fast, reliable, and the only mode of transport that will get you out of the horrendous traffic jams and clouds of dusts that plague Kathmandu driving. Heavier and faster than most, Royal Enfield motorcycles are the Harley Davidson of Asia. With their distinctive sound, it is hard to miss their presence. Renting Enfields is easy and cost effective. Compared to the restrictive conditions of buses and taxis, motorcycle journeys are filled with desired and sometimes undesired stops, the ability to see the countryside in an uninhibited manner, and a liberating experience of monumental proportions. + Read More

Bisket Jatra

Making my way to Bhaktapur on a slow and crowded bus ride to witness the annual Bisket Jatra festival, I was excited to spend the New Year in the old city. True to form the bus ride took twice as long as expected, but was worth the journey. Jatra is an annual Newari festival that falls on the 10th or 9th of April every year, according to the solar calendar, and runs for eight days. This festival is based on a religious myth. The king of Bhaktapur wanted to marry his daughter off, but after every time he made a match, the groom to be would be found dead in the martial bed. A stranger happened to hear of this repeating occurrence and desired to take the chance with this deadly woman. After making love to the princess two deadly serpents came from her nose to attack this new husband, but he killed the snakes just in time and broke the spell. Biska, in Newari means both snake and death, hence the na + Read More
