The nightlife in Kathmandu is still in its infancy stage. The nice bars are few and far between and most are no older then 10-15 years old. The current policies don’t help the growth of nightlife in Kathmandu. There’re hundreds of people who make their living in clubs, restaurants, bars, or as street venders. The Home Minister, Bamdv Gautam, has decided that nothing should be open past 11 p.m. Currently business in Kathmandu, the capital of this nation, has to be closed by 11 p.m. Not only has this reeked havoc on peoples well-being (at times cutting their monthly wages by 70% and putting some out of work) and to the tourists who come back after long hard days in the mountain desiring to enjoy a cold beer and a laid back evening out with friends (tourism accounts for the majority of capital generation in Nepal). So if you want to go out in Kathamndu these days you got to start early.
Depending on your taste of nightlife and the type of evening you desire, there is a little bit of something for everyone. There are many local watering holes in Thamel as well as through the valley that serve good snacks and cold beer. Blue Moon and Tom and Jerry’s are two bars that have been around the longest. Blue Moon with its laid-back atmosphere and chill music make it a perfect low-key evening. Tom and Jerry’s is an institution. Arguably the oldest bar in Thamel, this spacious bar has memoriablia from trekking, rafting, and traveling expeditions covering every inch of space. With two pool tables in the back, Tom and Jerry’s is an easy place to spend an evening. Outside of Thamel Jazz Upstairs also has become an institution among the ex-pat community and for in the know Nepalese. Known not only for the best live jazz in the valley that happens on Wednesday and Saturday nights, the momo’s are to die for. Everything is stop class, the bar tender, the cocktails, the atmosphere; Jazz Upstairs has become synonymous with quality.
If you are looking to do some dancing --Club platinum and Insomnia are the only two decent dance clubs. If you are a single woman, DO NOT I REAPEAT DO NOT go out by yourself. You will be placing yourself in a position that will and can be uncomfortable and potienially dangerous. If you want to go dancing get some of your guy friends to come along and travel in pack. There are various other dance clubs in Thamel but they are not worth mentioning.
Food is also important to get before 10 o’clock as most kitchens in restaurants close. If you are looking for a quick and cheap bite to eat, the Sandwich point in Thamel is the place to go. Once a dependable 24-hour establishment, the sandwich point has too succumb to the 11 o’clock curfew. Street vendors are few and far between after 11. Most have been hassled off the streets by the police, but if you want to chance that grumbling stomach in the morning, help out your local street vendor with ordering a variety of foods for super cheap. |
