TOP FOUR ACTIVITIES FOR THE MONSOON MONTHS

The rains seem to have made an early appearance this year. Monsoon rains tend to move in cycles. After some practice and experience you will get familiar with the feeling and look before the heavens open up and turn on the fire hose. Here are some helpful tips and suggested activities for the raining days.

1.    The movies-inside your house (if you have power, TV, and DVD player) or out. If you are one of the lucky individuals who has the required equipment, cozying up with a cup of tea and a few movies can make a mid morning shower or the afternoon darkness fly by. If being stuck in the house for most of the day has you experiencing cabin fever, you can escape during a rain break and head over to the cinema hall. These days a few western movies have made it into cinema halls, but your choices are limited.  Bollywood, Indian cinema, and Kollywood, Nepali cinema, dominate the movie screens. Most, if not all, Bollywood and Kollywood do not have sub-titles, but they are still wildly entertaining and at times laugh out loud funny.
2.    Meditation is a fundamental part of life in Nepal and they’re many places for you to practice yoga or meditation. There is a high concentration of Ashrams in Thamel and surrounding the various temples throughout Kathmandu valley. Locals also have yoga teachers come to their homes, so if you are interested it is a good idea to put a post at local hangouts or post on a local blog of your intentions.
3.    Meet up with your friends or take a book with you to a local café or small restaurant. Nothing warms you or the day like good conversation over a hot drink. If you don’t know many people this is a good opportunity to meet fellow travelers. If you are not in the mood for chitchatting delving into a good novel will always make the time pass enjoyably.
4.    You must have an extra pair of clothes in your pack, so why not leave the umbrella at home and go out and get soaked? Enjoy a singing in the rain moment. For those who are not native to the monsoon rains, this experience could be something you remember for a long time to come. Be a kid again, run through puddles, take a back ally walk, or enjoy the rain on your face.
